Smoking in Film
Scientific studies from Dartmouth College support that smoking in movies is a significant risk factor for youth trying their first cigarette.
Today, more than 1,070 young people in the United States will start smoking because of exposure to smoking in movies.
Nearly 44% of smoking initiation by adolescents in the United States can be credited to exposure to smoking in movies, and the more a favorite star is seen smoking in a movie, the more likely that a teen viewer will smoke.
The Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Project
The Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down! Project (TUTD) is designed to counter the glamorization of tobacco in film by recruiting and training student volunteers between the ages of 14 and 22 to analyze tobacco content in movies and share it with their peers.
Each week, they review the top 10 current box office movies, noting the amount and type of tobacco depicted, the demographics of who is seen using it, and any perceived message about tobacco – the results are then entered into our database and posted on www.SceneSmoking.org. More than 800 students have been a part of TUTD and more than 1,300 movies have been reviewed.
