Air Quality Flag Program Expanded at Three Local Schools Will Help Protect Children’s Health
Building on the success of our Air Quality Index Activity Chart and our pilot Flag Program with Folsom Cordova Unified School District, we have expanded the program to three schools and added two more school districts. Thanks to a generous grant from Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, colored flags, each representing a different air quality health category ranging from good to very unhealthy on the air quality index, are being flown at three school campuses to identify air quality conditions. School staff, students and parents received important information and the Air Quality Index Activity Charts to raise awareness that poor air quality can present a serious hazard to children’s health.
Students were chosen to work with the custodians and will be responsible for raising the flags at Lichen Elementary in San Juan Unified School District, William Land Elementary in Sacramento City Unified School District and Williamson Elementary in Folsom Cordova Unified School District. In addition to the flags, large Air Quality Index Activity Charts will also be displayed at the two campuses in highly visible places.
To launch the program, special presentations for the students with “first flag” raising ceremonies are held this month (Clean Air Month) at each school. These flags will not only be an easy visual cue for school personnel and students when they are outside but it will also be a cue for the surrounding communities. The school districts have been a major supporter of our Air Quality Index Activity Chart, to help modify outdoor activities on poor air quality days.
