Jane Hagedorn has been the Chief Executive Officer of Breathe California of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails (formerly known as the American Lung Association of Sacramento-Emigrant Trails) since l976. A locally incorporated and independent voluntary health agency since l917, the Association provides innovative grassroots program initiatives both locally and nationally in pursuit of its mission as the Clean Air and Healthy Lungs People.

Under Jane’s leadership, the Association was the principal mover in Proposition 99, California’s successful tobacco tax initiative that has reduced smoking by 42%, and has successfully developed tobacco control programs now nationally replicated. The organization also led the way in development of innovative clean air strategies including bringing light rail to the Sacramento area, creating the nationally regarded Cleaner Air Partnership with the Sacramento Metro Chamber, and pioneering clean air initiatives during her tenure.

Some of Jane’s extensive public service activities have included Board leadership roles on the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Arden Park and Recreation District, Friends of Light Rail, Planning and Conservation League, Sacramento Tomorrow Coalition, and the Sacramento Symphony. She was the first woman appointed to the Sacramento County Planning Commission. She was also the founding President of the Sacramento Tree Foundation and the statewide California Oak Foundation.

She has taught nonprofit management at the University of California Davis Graduate School of Management’s MBA program, chaired the American River Parkway Funding Working Group, and served on the Board of Directors of Valley Vision. Jane was an American Leadership Foundation Fellow, and has co-authored two books on historic preservation and on preservation of native oaks in the Central Valley.

Her educational background includes a BA with Honors in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduate work in International Relations and Latin American Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington D.C.

Her husband Jim is an attorney and both enjoy being proud parents of James and Jennifer and happy grandparents of Matthew, Julia, John Charles and Jared.

I'm so sorry to miss what promises to be a wonderful party.  Believe me if there was any way for me to be there, I would.

Thank you for your service to our community and to Breathe California. Hundreds of thousands who will never even know your name have benefited from your efforts.

Our fantastic hike up the Sierra Buttes to the summit will be a memory I'll always treasure.  I appreciate your patience in pointing out the various plants, flowers and trees as we all gasped for air. That journey even encouraged me to plant my own vegetable garden which somehow seems to expand each year.

Congratulations on a successful career and best wishes for your future endeavors.

Love,
Larry Carr

I have many fond memories working with you and the great staff – from Clean Air Luncheons – most memorable at McClellan in the Airplane Hanger – to great Bike Treks.  I also truly appreciate all of the great people that I met and things that I learned being part of the Board.  I wish you many new adventures on your next chapter in life.

Jane hired me right out of college to coordinate ALASET's communications and fundraising campaigns.  I spent a great 10 years working for this remarkable woman whom I grew to respect very much.  Some favorite memories are the Prop. 99 tobacco tax campaign, Bike Treks and the ever-poplular Celebrity Waiters' Luncheon. I have been able to transfer what I learned about working with volunteers and nonprofits into other venues: church and my children's schools.

I enjoyed many friendships with other staff members, especially Raquel, Bonnie, Laura, Janie and Valeri, and lots of board members.  While on Jane's staff I met my husband Jim and had my first two children.  In fact, Jim picked me up from the office for our first date!

Jane, I am sorry I cannot come to your party (It's is Emily's graduation day), but I wish you many happy years ahead.  Keep sending us your Christmas cards and photos; we always look forward to them.

Yours truly,
Amy Scherschligt

Retirement? Is this a real retirement or a Betty Turner-like retirement? Your community has so much for which to thank you, and so do I. ALASET was my first job out of university, and my handful of years with you put me on a happy career path of public health. Not only did I gain much-needed job experience, I have wonderful memories of the ETBT, Celebrity Waiter’s and even some enjoyable board meetings that went late into the evening. I would love to attend what promises to be a fabulous party, but I am at the CDC in Atlanta continuing some of the good work I started with you. I also have a beautiful new baby at home (I had to sneak that in Grandma!)

Please enjoy your richly deserved retirement,
Shannon Robinson Ahmed

Congratulations on your retirement and many thanks for the leadership you have provided to Sacramento’s nonprofit community.  We all live in a better, healthier community because of your work.  Enjoy your next adventures – I hope they are as productive and rewarding as your past work.  All the best, Jane,
